DIVERSITY PRACTITIONER CERTIFICATE PROGRAM
Course Descriptions

The Diversity Practitioner Certificate Program includes the following courses:

Use of Self as a Diversity Practitioner
(Course 1)

View Dates and Location
This program examines the diversity field from an individual/intrapersonal perspective. Participants explore the dynamics of self, social group, identity development, dominant and subordinated group membership, internalized oppression, privilege projection and other resistance processes. The results are enhanced self-knowledge and self-management that improve one’s use of self as a diversity practitioner.

Current Diversity Theory and Practice
(Course 2)

View Dates and Location
This program provides an overview of current diversity theory and practice including the social construction of differences, the theoretical underpinnings of diversity and oppression theory/practice in a U.S. and world historical context, systems theory and change, conflict, participatory action research, values, ethics and practitioner competencies This in-depth study provides a solid theoretical grounding.  

Diversity Group Development and Intervention Skills (Course 3)
View Dates and Location
This program examines the diversity field from a group/team perspective. It includes an examination of the social construction of race, gender, sexual orientation and ability, the impact of oppression on individuals and groups, group development processes, dominant and subordinated group dynamics and group facilitation and intervention skills. This practical group development and intervention experience develops practitioner competency.

Diversity Training Design and Facilitation Skills (Course 4)
View Dates and Location
This program addresses training design theory and its application to diversity training events and programs. Time is devoted to a practicum on designing and facilitating training events and on developing facilitation and intervention skills.

Organization Diversity Consulting and Intervention Skills—Part I (Course 5)
View Dates and Location
This program examines the diversity field from an organization perspective. Participants explore organization development theory and change models and interview, survey, feedback, data collection and analysis methods. This course includes an organization action-research practicum involving entry, contracting, data collection and diagnosis, action planning, intervention and evaluation.

Organization Diversity Consulting and Intervention Skills—Part II (Course 6)
View Dates and Location
This program provides participants the chance to review and summarize organization diversity consulting and intervention skills learning. Participants also examine measurement and assessment methodologies, the design and practice of organization diversity and change strategies/programs that address diversity, inclusion and oppression.  

Nation and World Diversity as the Context for Diversity Work (Course 7)
View Dates and Location
This program examines the diversity field from a nation and world perspective. This course includes the social construction of class, race, gender, ethnicity and nationality and the impact of oppression on individuals, groups, organizations, nations and the world. In addition, this course addresses xenophobic oppression, nationalism, colonialism, cultural differences, cultural oppression and dominant and subordinated nation experiences and dynamics.

The first six courses will be held in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. 

The final course will be held outside the United States. 

Locations currently under consideration include Mexico and Trinidad.
