What is Coaching?
Coaching is partnering with individuals in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to expand their ability to achieve important outcomes.
Professional coaches provide an ongoing partnership designed to help clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Coaches help people improve their performances and enhance the quality of their lives.
Coaches are trained to listen, to observe and to customize their approach to individual client needs. They seek to elicit solutions and strategies from the client; they believe the client is naturally creative and resourceful. The coach's job is to provide support to enhance the skills, resources, and creativity that the client already has.

The NTL Coaching Brand - Its Characteristics and Value
NTL coaching services are built on the unique, powerful, historical strengths of NTL laboratory learning. Coaches focus on building people's capacity for self-awareness and increasing their ability to self-manage within the systems in which they live and work. Among our competitors, we are the true pioneers in applied behavioral science. We consciously seek to apply relevant, useful scientific research to help people learn and change.
There are two key areas that distinguish NTL's coaching services:
1. Understanding and Managing Ourselves
NTL coaches encourage learning and change at the personal level using multiple strategies.
Skill development may include:
- Using personal reflection to enhance self-awareness and interpersonal effectiveness
- Taking ownership for personal behavior and developing strategies for self-correction
- Increasing the impact of one's personal presence and influence in the system
- Promoting personal authenticity at home and at work
2. Understanding and Managing Relationships
NTL coaches acknowledge the whole person and help people work together effectively across differences. This is particularly important for leaders and managers as they face challenges creating the context for effective and productive work.
Skill development may include:
- Developing interpersonal communication and conflict management skills
- Learning to identify the difference between the intent and impact of one's behavior
- Building collaborative relationships
- Acknowledging and managing the power and challenges of inclusion and diversity, (i.e., race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, age, culture, family, ableness, etc.) in order to optimize and leverage our multiple differences in the ways we do our work in the world
- Giving and receiving feedback responsibly
- Systems Thinking
Outcomes
As a result of coaching, participants will:
- Clarify insights and experiences gained from the NTL Lab
- Translate these into specific actions in order to more effectively
deal with leadership and management challenges at work
The Coaching Process
Prior to the first session, a set of questions will be sent to help you focus on your learnings from the lab. While the process below outlines four coaching discussions, you and your coach may decide to design your timing for your coaching discussions differently. The boundary is that all coaching must be completed within three months once started, with coaching occurring each month. The first conversation will take place within 7-10 days after you sign up for the coaching. This initial conversation may be a brief introductory exchange, resulting in an agreement for how you and your Journey Partner (NTL Coach) will work together to accomplish your goals.
Discussion 1
- Contract - "Journey Partners" - define relationship (communication preferences, logistics, confidentiality)
- Clarify insights and experiences
- Develop targeted application and coaching goals
Based on the Coaching Goals expressed during the first Coaching Discussion, your NTL Coach will develop a proposed coaching outline (including outcomes and themes for dialogue). This outline will be shared with you prior to Discussion 2 for your input and concurrence.
Discussions 2 and 3
- Work with the themes that emerge - challenges, learnings
- Translate insights into opportunities for behavior change
- Deal with challenges to make the changes you'd like to see
- Develop strategies to help you get the impact you'd like to achieve
Discussion 4
- Consolidate learning
- Develop a support system to sustain desired changes
- Exchange feedback about the process and its impact
- Close/celebrate
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the benefit to me should I engage in a follow-up coaching partnership with an NTL Coach?
The purpose of Coaching is to "move the action forward." In this sense, Coaching allows a person to take her or his personal insights to the next level, and to apply them to leadership and/or situations involving transition. You will have the opportunity to:
- Deepen the learning gained from the lab
- Clarify insights and experiences
- Translate your experience into new practices, skills and behaviors
- Deal with communication challenges at home and work
Who are the coaches?
- All coaches are NTL members who have experience in leadership coaching.
- All coaches are seasoned, trained and experienced in the areas of leadership and management, group dynamics, self-awareness, interpersonal effectiveness, group identity and issues of diversity, etc.
- Coaches are matched based on your learning goals and needs, and will not be your core lab trainers.
What will the NTL coach provide?
- One-on-one confidential coaching to begin within 7-10 days of the lab
- Six hours of coaching over three months (Coaching will be provided over the telephone, with e-mail support)
- Resource and/or training recommendations as appropriate
How is coaching different from the T-group process?
The T-group helps individuals learn about themselves and those behaviors that could be getting in the way of personal or professional advancement. The primary vehicle for learning in the lab is the T-group. Coaching is an action-driven, one-to-one experience that enables you to take new awareness and learning and put them into practice in your life and your organization. Your coach is your partner and your champion in this process.
How do I get matched with a coach?
- Prior to the first discussion, you will receive a brief questionnaire in which you identify your preferences around working with a coach.
- NTL will select a coach to work with you based on these preferences.
- The NTL coach will contact you via e-mail and will include a profile of her/his professional coaching experience.
When will the coaching take place?
The coach and the coaching client will mutually agree on a schedule as part of their first conversation, which will be scheduled via email. Unless otherwise agreed to, the entire coaching engagement will take place by phone. The first discussion should occur within 7-10 days of signing up for the coaching.
How will the coaching take place?
The coaching will take place over the phone, with emails between appointments to support the learning. Assignments between discussions may also be part of the coaching process. Sometimes this involves reading a brief article which supports or enhances learning; sometimes it involves experimenting with a new behavior and reflection on the experience; or your coach may simply ask you to keep a daily journal of what you are noticing about yourself during the coaching engagement.
What if I need to reschedule an appointment?
You must provide at least 24 hours notice to your coach if you need to
reschedule. Failure to provide adequate notice of cancellation could result in the amount of time reserved for the cancelled discussion being counted as part of your six hour Coaching engagement.
Over what period of time will the coaching take place?
The coaching should begin within 7-10 days after signing up for the service, and must be completed within three months of the initial contact with your coach.
Will there be a written report from the coaching? Who will receive this?
Coaching is a confidential partnership between you and your coach. At the end of each discussion, you and your coach will summarize the conversation, including any next steps. This is a standard practice in the Coaching partnership. No documentation will be forwarded to any other party.
Is it possible to continue working with my coach after the six hours?
Yes. Inform your Coach about this interest at the final session, and she/he will share with you the process for contracting beyond the six hours. You will contract with the coach through NTL Customized Services.
When do I have to decide whether I want to sign up for Coaching?
It is suggested that you sign up for the service no later than three weeks following your lab.
Is there a time limit on when I can use this coaching?
Yes. You can start coaching within 12 weeks of completing an HI Lab or ISLS and should finish within 12 weeks of starting. The NTL Client Relationship Manager will be in touch with you within two weeks of your lab ending to get more information in order to match you with the best coach to further your goals. Please note that if we do not hear back from you or you have not completed your coaching hours within six months of us reaching out, the ApplicationPlus fee will be rendered forfeit and be used for scholarships and administrative costs for the Coaching Community of Practice.
How do I sign up for the service?
Just like signing up for NTL programs, you can register online or by phone with a credit card.
